I am amazed at the work involved in building this power station over one hundred years ago.

Over 100 years ago in 1915, under adverse conditions, the Eugenia
Power Station was completed. The project included 1 concrete dam, 6 mud
dams, canals, wooden stave pipe, flume line, surge tank, power house and
raising the 8th concession. The power was turned on in November of
1915. All this work required a lot of manual labour to achieve. It's amazing when you consider that the construction took place during
the First World War.

A book was compiled by Barbara Pearn in 2015, to commemorate the
extraordinary achievement of bringing power to this area. The book is
over 120 pages with text and many photographs of the construction. It
includes information about William Hogg's power station and his attempt
to sell power to the city of Toronto. What followed were failed attempts
to generate power at Eugenia Falls. The Hydro Electric Commission of
Ontario purchased the property and started construction in the spring of
1914.

  Don't forget the bug repellant

On July 1st my husband and I decided to hike the Flesherton Management Forest trail at the end of Highland Drive in Flesherton.

It was a relatively hot and humid day. We knew there would be
mosquitoes, but we weren't prepared for the onslaught that we would
encounter on the trail. We had the lotion style, insect repellent with
us, versus spray repellant. We applied it to our arms, legs, neck, etc
all exposed skin. It wasn't enough. The mosquitoes were biting us
through our clothes on our backs. Needless to say... we walked quickly.

On the trail, I was not expecting the terrain to vary as much as it
did on the trail. We walked on well worn paths beside evergreen trees,
in long grass and on gravel surfaces. We passed cedar rail fences, small
streams, an area that seemed to be a former gravel pit, meadows and
forest cover. This trail would be fantastic in the fall, with no bugs to
fight off and autumn colours to add to the view.

This trail is about 2 km, perfect for an easy walk. The trails are
marked with painted blazes on trees. Long grass in places maked it hard
to know if you are on the trail or not. Luckily, others had gone before
us and we could see where they had walked.
